The metered areas, in which Taxis must charge passengers according to the distance travelled are Lautoka , Nadi including Nadi International Airport, Sigatoka, Navua, Lami, Suva , Nausori including Nausori Airport. However, in smaller towns and rural areas, taxis use a fixed price system and most locals can tell you the price to your destination. If you are intending to hire for longer trips than you should negotiate with the driver and both parties will have to mutually agree on the price. You can also hire a taxi for a day or half a day for a fixed price.

Buses and Public Transportation:
In Fiji, there is a wide range of air-conditioned coaches serving resorts for tourists. However, the local open-windowed buses service is also available. Local buses allow the you to experience a ride, just by stopping a bus at any bus stop along the road or at the bus stations in every town.

Hire and Rental cars are available at international airports and major resorts. You must ensure you have a valid driving license from your home country, this will enable you to hire a rental car, after being sighted by the Rental Car company. Hire vehicles are usually driven by the owner themselves.

There are highways from Rakiraki to Suva, via Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, Nadi and the Coral Coast. The highway speed limit is between 60km/h to 80km/h depending on location. Speed within town boundaries and built up areas is 50km/h.

Minibuses:
There are also Minibuses, which ply thier trade along most trunk routes. Please be aware that legal Minibuses carry a yellow number plate (all legal PSVs have yellow number plates), which mean they carry insurance for passengers they carry. These normally travel from town to town and do not, as a rule, stop in between the urban centers.

SPEED AND ROAD SAFETY:
Speeding continues to be major factor in road crashes, so slow down and save lives!

BE AWARE OF THE FACTS ABOUT SPEEDING!

CHOOSE A SAFE SPEED FOR THE CONDITIONS:
Speed limits are the maximum travel speed for any road. In many conditions, you should travel at a lower speed-such as in bad weather, after dark, in heavy traffic, on unfamiliar, winding or narrow roads.

REMEMBER TO CHOOSE A SAFE SPEED FOR THE DRIVING CONDITIONS

SPEEDING INCREASE CRASHES:
You are more likely to crash if you exceed the speed limit or drive at a speed that is not appropriate for the conditions.

As your speed increases, you have a less time to react to emergencies and it takes a greater distance to stop. Other road users also find it more difficult to judge how fast you are traveling.
