Window Tinting
Regulation 50 of the Land Transport Act states that:- to any window, forward of the back of the front seat, surface films which allow not less than 70% visible light transmittance through the coated window;
- If a surface film is applied to window behind the front seat of a vehicle as luminous transmittance is less than 70% at any point in the visible light range, the visible must be fitted with rear vision mirrors on both its right and left hand sides.
- No film may be applied or fitted to a vehicle unless it is of a type approved Authority.
Headlamps and Reflectors
Regulation 55-66 of the Land Transport (Vehicle Registration and Construction) Regulation 2000 specifies the type, colour , construction of lamps and reflectors. And also where they should be located on the motor vehicle as per the following-
- For all Head, Front Marker (parker light), and Rear Number Plate Lamp should be white.
- For all tail Lamps the colours should be red.
- Turn signal lamp must be amber.
- Flashing Lamps only permitted on emergency vehicles.
- Blue and Red – LTA and Police
- Red – Medical, Emergency, and Fire
- Amber- Tow trucks, public utility vehicles and any other approved by the authority.
The regulation does not permit any other colour or combination of colours allowed on any motor vehicle, other than those specified above.
Extra Light Fittings
Pursuant to Regulation 55 of the Land Transport (Vehicle Regulation and Construction) Regulation 2000 the following are illegal:
- Under floor lights
- Wiper lights
- Bonnet and windscreen washer lights
- Fender or mudguard lights
- Radio antenna lights.
- 55-60 watts lights for head beam
Fog Lamp Usage
Regulation 34 (3) Land Transport (Traffic) Regulation 2000 states-
"A person may affix a fog lamp to a motor vehicle for the purpose of driving in a fog or mist".
The above makes it illegal for any vehicle to turn on their fog lamp, unless atmospheric condition dictates by way of a mist or fog.
Motor vehicle owners must be aware the infringement of any of the above will incur a fine or appereance in any court.
Other Modifications
Regulation 38 of the Land Transport (Vehicle Registration & Construction) Regulation 2000 states that any modification of any kind , to any motor vehicle, can only be made after the prior approval of the LTA has been sought and received.
This applies to modifications of the following:
- Changing the colour of the vehicle
- Changing the engine block
- Changing the chassis, fork or frame
- Lengthening the chassis
- Changing a Commercial vehicle into a passenger vehicle
- Changing a panel van into a window van
- Rearranging of increasing the seating capacity and positions
- Removing or changing the VIN
- Changing the suspension
- Changing or rearranging the brake system
- Alterations or changes to the steering mechanisms / geometry
- Changes in position and or colour of head and markers lamps
- Wheelbase and track
- Number of axles
- Increasing the unladen mass by than 50kg
- Increase in cc rating and
- Others
The approval to carry out modification on any of the above will only be given by an Authorised Officer of the LTA.
It is an offence for a motor vehicle owner to effect changes and modifications without the prior knowledge and consent of the LTA or an agent or agency of the LTA.
