Law Enforcement
The Land Transport Act 1998 provides sufficient power to the “Authorised Officers” of the Authority in line with the enforcements officers of other countries and specific powers to the Police to ensure that the Act is properly administered when dealing with traffic offenders.
The Authority’s law enforcement officers would be assisting the Police to a greater extent in carrying out traffic law enforcement work, especially in relation to various licenses issued by the Authority.
Appointment of Authorised Officers.
- Authorised Officers will be appointed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) for all or particular purposes of the Land Transport Act.
- Such authorised officers would be required to carry and if requested, produce a written authorization from the Authority.
Powers of the Authorised Officers
An authorised officer of the LTA may exercise the powers vested in a Police officer under the provisions of the Act except the power to arrest.
The Land Transport Act 1998, empowers the authorised officers to;
- tow motor vehicles and impound them, allowing all investigations to be completed before release.
- give direction to the driver of a motor vehicle to stop and remain stationery for investigation and examination purpose
- enter any property without a warrant for purpose of examining a motor vehicle.
- seize number plates or remove or destroy registration labels of vehicles which have expired or otherwise been cancelled
- issue Traffic Infringement notices (TIN’s) for breach of the provisions of the Act and regulations.
Offences
1. Traffic Infringement Notice is issues to offenders
2. 21 days time is allowed to pay the fix penalty
3. If not paid within 21 days, proceedings for an offence under the Land Transport Act 1998 may be taken in a Magidtrate's Court on the information of an authorised officer of the LTA.
