The following checks must be carried out on vehicles on a regular basis:
Engine oil level
- The engine must be switched off
- Remove the dipstick from the engine manually
- Wipe off the excess oil on the bottom end of the dip stick
- Re-insert the dipstick completely into the engine
- Remove the dipstick from the engine again and observe the edge of the dipstick for the oil level mark
- H-means high and L-means low oil level. The level of the oil must be between high and low mark
- If the level of oil is low, refill to optimal mark
Automatic Transmission oil level
- The engine must be running and in normal operating temperature
- Remove the dipstick from the transmission and observe the edge of the dipstick for the oil level mark
- H-means high and L-means low oil level. The level of the oil must be between high and low mark
- If the level of oil is low, refill to optimal mark
Power steering oil level
- The engine must be switched off
- Remove the dipstick from the power steering reservoir manually
- Wipe off the excess oil on the bottom end of the dip stick
- Re-insert the dipstick completely into the power steering reservoir
- Remove the dipstick from the reservoir again and observe the edge of the dipstick for the oil level mark
- H-means high and L-means low oil level. The level of the oil must be between high and low mark
- If the level of oil is low, refill to optimal mark
Coolant level
- The engine must be switched off
- The coolant reservoir tank must be checked to ensure the coolant level is up the optimal level
- The engine must be cold when checking coolant level and if hot, precaution must be taken
- The level of coolant in the reservoir tank must be to the top (full)
- If level of coolant is low, then refill to optimal mark
- The radiator cap must be replaced
Fan belt condition and tension (alternator, water pump, air compressor, power steering)
- The fan belt must be visually checked for cuts indicating wear
- Fan belt tension must be checked manually for specified deflection (5mm deflection thumb rule). Excessive deflection will indicate excessive wear and/or slackness
Battery connection and condition
- Battery terminal must be checked for proper connection and tightness
- Battery water level must be checked
- Battery terminal must be checked visually for corrosion
- While removing battery, the negative terminal must be removed first and when installing, the positive terminal must be installed first
- While jumper is used, parallel connection (positive to positive and negative to negative)
Lights
- Lights must be checked for operation
Tyre condition and pressure
- Tyre pressure must be checked visually
- Tyre condition must be checked for cuts, balloon, and other wear patterns
Brake fluid level
- There must be no leakage in the brake system
- The brake fluid level must be in the optimal level
Clutch fluid level
- There must be no leakage in the brake system
- The brake fluid level must be in the optimal level

SPEED AND ROAD SAFETY:
Speeding continues to be major factor in road crashes, so slow down and save lives!
BE AWARE OF THE FACTS ABOUT SPEEDING!
CHOOSE A SAFE SPEED FOR THE CONDITIONS:
Speed limits are the maximum travel speed for any road. In many conditions, you should travel at a lower speed-such as in bad weather, after dark, in heavy traffic, on unfamiliar, winding or narrow roads.
REMEMBER TO CHOOSE A SAFE SPEED FOR THE DRIVING CONDITIONS
SPEEDING INCREASE CRASHES:
You are more likely to crash if you exceed the speed limit or drive at a speed that is not appropriate for the conditions.
As your speed increases, you have a less time to react to emergencies and it takes a greater distance to stop. Other road users also find it more difficult to judge how fast you are traveling. |
